Hello, my name is Matthew and I want to share with you how chiropractic care changed my life. If you are suffering from back pain or even experience some mild discomfort from time to time this story is for YOU.
It was 20 years ago, and I had been out of the army for a little over a year. While it was empowering to be living on my own for the first time, it was also humbling because I was working two jobs. I was still trying to figure out what career path I wanted to take before starting college. I was making ends meet and even qualified for a used car loan. I was happy and enjoyed the little things in life.
It was the Sunday before Thanksgiving; I was on my way home from work that afternoon and fell victim to a car accident. The other driver failed to stop at a stop sign. Luckily for me, I had a friend in the car who warned me. If it wasn’t for that warning, he would have hit my driver’s side door and possibly I would not be sharing this story with you today.
Fortunately, everyone involved in the accident came out unharmed and I could even drive my car home which was only a mile away. It wasn’t until the next day that I woke up suffering from debilitating back pain. I needed to find something or someone to help me get my quality of life back.
I was struggling with this crippling back pain. That meant I couldn’t do any of the activities I could effortlessly do just days ago. Sleeping was also difficult, it was impossible to get comfortable. I would get so frustrated and feel a sense of hopelessness that I would cry myself to sleep.
To make things worse, it stressed me over how I would be capable to work at my two jobs, which required me to be on my feet the whole day. I was afraid that I could not support myself.
Being young and healthy all my life until now I didn’t know where to start. I tried over-the-counter medication, and that didn’t help so I started looking for a doctor. Now, let me remind you this was twenty years ago, and the phone book was where you would go to search for doctors. This was during dial-up internet so websites like Facebook and Google reviews weren’t available. There were so many options to choose from and I didn’t know where to turn, I felt like giving up. Then, as if by chance, something amazing happened…
I realized that I couldn’t do everything on my own, so I called my mom and everything changed. She suggested that I see Dr. Churma, the chiropractor who helped her with her chronic back pain.
So I scheduled an appointment so I could finally get this agonizing back pain taken care of. But there was still a problem…
I didn’t know much about chiropractic care or what to expect. All I knew was what my mom explained to me. It was now the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and I was at my first visit. Dr. Churma listened while I explained the events of the car accident and how I felt that day and the pain I was struggling with these past three days. Much to my surprise he even asked me questions I never thought of. Next was the exam, I must admit, the process was much faster than I had expected and finally, we took a series of x-rays. To my surprise, I didn’t get adjusted that day. Sensing my frustration, Dr. Churma reassured me by explaining that due to the amount of swelling, inflammation and pain I was in, getting adjusted was not recommended at this time. To make things worse, it was the day before Thanksgiving and my next visit wasn’t until Monday. As we were wrapping up the visit I asked if he would be writing me a prescription for pain medication and muscle relaxers. What he did next was so eye-opening because I never had a doctor do this before. He sat down, then proceeded to teach me about what my body is going through and how this is the body’s natural healing process. He then gave me an ice pack and instructed me on how I should use it but more importantly, why I should use it. I thought he was crazy.
To my surprise his “ice prescription” allowed me to enjoy my Thanksgiving and get me through the weekend. After my first adjustment, I noticed some relief and was able to sleep better that night. By the end of the first week, I no longer had the constant excruciating back pain, but more importantly, I was stress-free because I was able to return to work. By the end of the first month, I had no pain at all, except only when I overexerted myself with certain strenuous activities. In the end, I was able to go back to doing all my past activities and to my surprise felt better than I did before the accident.
But it wasn’t until after that first month of care when I had very little to no pain I realized how beneficial chiropractic care was. It all started when I was hanging out with a friend and I asked him what his plans were for the next day. He said he had a doctor’s appointment and I asked for what? He said to refill his prescription for pain medication and muscle relaxers from his car accident he had a month before mine.
It was at that moment I realized how life-changing Chiropractic Care truly is and the tremendous impact it had on my quality of life. Not to mention how its practical approach in how the body heals, which is unparalleled to mainstream healthcare, potentially saved me from a life of opioid addiction.
